Digital Libraries; Information Literacy and eLiteracy; Virtual Reference services; Academic Library Management in the Hybrid Library Environment, especially library co-operation; the Social Philosophy of Information Management; Library and Information Science journal publishing.
As a practitioner librarian in academic library middle management, my professional interests have reflected my professional role (currently Head of Reference and Information at Strathclyde University's Andersonian Library).
Previously in the role of Engineering Subject Librarian and Andersonian Library web manager I explored a variety of information provision issues, including system usability and e-journal interfaces, but doing so in the context of applied service delivery and practitioner writing. My engagement with Library Co-operation and Digital Library issues together with Document Delivery and Information Literacy was initiated by my involvement in the GAELS project (Glasgow Allied ELectroncally with Strathclyde).
Memberships and affiliations
I am an Associate of the Centre for Digital Library Research and also a member of the Foundation Committee of the eLit conference series. I am Editor of the practitioner research journal 'Library Review' and serve on the LIS journals Standing Committee of the International Federation of Library Associations.
I currently have a particular commitment to disability services in libraries and serve on the Special Needs Business Committee of the Special Needs Group of the Scottish Confederation of University and Research Libraries. I am currently also managing the Scottish contribution to a tripartite virtual reference collaboration between the Library Service at Strathclyde and two University Libraries in Australia, UTS and Curtin University Library. This was the first purely HE-based real-time virtual reference service in the UK.
