About
The Resource Discovery iKit consolidates and synthesises resource discovery outputs from relevant JISC development programmes and JISC services within the Information Environment, and provides a single point of quick and easy access to tools to support resource discovery development, including:
- information
- advice
- services
- demonstrators
- case studies
- software
- manuals
- related standards and technology
Statistics
The iKit describes
- 289 items
- from 92 JISC projects
- in 26 JISC programmes
- delivered by 91 institutions and organisations
- using 47 technologies and standards
Audience
Rather than being a comprehensive programme synthesis, the iKit is intended to provide answers to the key questions which users might wish to ask and so is selective in terms of the information to which it points.
The main audiences for the Infokit are:
- Computing, library, learning technologists and those implementing resource discovery services in UK Higher Education.
- JISC projects.
Embedding iKit searches in external web pages
Parameterised URLs for iKit keyword searches can be embedded as hyperlinks behind text and graphics on any web page. Accessing Resource Discovery iKit content gives full details.
The interactive concept map of the JISC Information Environment on the homepage of the iKit service can also be embedded in any web page. An XHTML snippet for displaying the map graphic and defining clickable areas with hyperlinks to iKit searches can be downloaded as the text file rdikitmap.txt and pasted into any XHTML script.
An XHTML snippet for a web page including the interactive map and a short introduction to the iKit service is also available for download as the text file rdikitintro.txt.
Technology and standards used
The service uses the following technologies and standards.
For the database storing inventory metadata and vocabularies:
- MS Access
- Third normal form
For the web pages for the search and retrieve interfaces:
- Adobe Cold Fusion Markup Language
- Adobe DreamWeaver
- CSS level 2
- SQL
- XHTML level 1.0
